Mediation is a structured way of resolving conflict using an independent trained facilitator to talk through issues confidentially and reach common ground and joint resolution. By bringing individuals or groups together in a safe environment, mediators aim to give participants the responsibility of finding solutions themselves, and an agreement for working effectively is created.
Although most problems can be resolved with little intervention, conflict can escalate into something much more difficult to deal with. Workplace mediation aims to rebuild working relationships quickly and effectively, reducing the negative impact which can arise in the workplace if issues are left unresolved, such as stress, sickness absence and turnover of staff and the need for lengthy grievance investigations and disputes.
